Beirut (ANTARA News/Xinhua) - Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said Friday that the United States is against an Arab plan aimed at resolving the current political deadlock in Lebanon.

"Americans are against the Arab initiative, and were against it from the beginning," Berri said in an interview aired on local ANB TV late Friday.

Berri, also a leading figure in Lebanon`s opposition, affirmed that the on-going political crises in Lebanon is related to inter- Arab dispute in the first place, calling on Lebanese to be united and find a solution because "no group in Lebanon can win over the other."

He also stressed that "the Israeli danger is the most important because Israel is seeking retaliation to its lose in July war (in 2006)."

Lebanon is currently facing the most serious deadlock since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war. For the first time in its history, the presidential seat has been void since Nov. 24 of 2007 when former president Emile Lahoud stepped down.

Arab League chief Amr Moussa has failed so far in convincing the two Lebanese rival blocs to accept an Arab plan which was endorsed in Cairo on Jan. 6.

The three-point plan aimed at immediately electing Lebanese Army Commander General Michel Suleiman as the president of the nation and proceeding to forming a government of national unity and drafting a new electoral law.(*)
