It`s Paolo, not Paul. Italian media claimed as their own the "psychic" octopus who accurately predicts World Cup results after his trainer in Germany on Sunday revealed he was caught in Italian waters.

"The octopus` name is Paolo," wrote sports newspaper Tuttosport on its website.

The news is "a small satisfaction for Italy at the end of a tournament that has given the Azzurri very little joy," wrote daily Il Corriere della Sera on its website.

Verena Bartsch, the octopus` trainer told the Sunday edition of Germany`s Bild tabloid newspaper that she caught him in April in the sea off the Italian island of Elba, near Tuscany. He was four weeks old at the time.

Bartsch`s version conflicts with Paul`s official biography, according to which the octopus is two years old and came from Weymouth, England, before moving to an aquarium in western Germany.

Paul has accurately predicted seven out of seven games from his aquarium home, where he is given two boxes, each containing a mussel and the flag of the two competing World Cup teams.

You couldn’t see much more than a wisp of hair and, perhaps appropriately, a cute pair of feet. But this little bundle being taken for his first trip out is the child thought to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s baby son.

He was pictured with the footballer’s mother Dolores Aveiro, her boyfriend Jose Andrade and a nanny at a service station between the Algarve and Lisbon.

Ronaldo was nowhere to be seen, having arrived in the Algarve yesterday afternoon hours after the baby was seen on his way from there to Lisbon.

A soft toy partially hid the boy’s face in his carry-cot, but the fair hair on show suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo Jr may grow up with the looks of his mystery mother rather than his olive-skinned father.

The 25-year-old Real Madrid player, who earns £200,000 a week, drove to the Algarve from Lisbon in his red Ferrari not long after the baby had made the reverse journey with his grandmother.

Dolores and her boyfriend had been looking after him at a rented home in the Algarve resort of Vilamoura.

Ronaldo made the surprise announcement on July 3 that he had become father to a son. He said the mother wanted to remain anonymous and revealed that he would raise the child on his own with help from his family.

Italian rider Leonardo Piepoli faces a two-year ban after testing positive for the latest generation erythropoietin (EPO) product CERA, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) said on Thursday.

A CONI statement said Piepolom, 37, had tested positive for Mircera, CERA`s commercial name, at this year`s Tour de France. Samples from the Tour were retested after the World Anti-Doping Agency was alerted to the presence of a new version of the
blood-booster EPO.

"CONI`s Prosecutors have charged the cyclist Piepoli and requested a two-year ban," a statement on the CONI website (www.coni.it) said.

Italian media reported that Piepoli had attended a meeting with CONI prosecutors earlier on Thursday.

The French Anti-Doping Agency said in October that Piepoli had twice tested positive for CERA during July`s Tour. The results were subsequently confirmed by tests on the B samples.

The rider had already been sacked by his Saunier Duval team after his compatriot and fellow squad member Riccardo Ricco also failed a drugs test for CERA.

Piepoli, who won a stage on the Tour, had not been found to have tested positive at that time but Saunier Duval said he had "violated the team`s code of ethics" and quit the race.

Ricco has already been banned by CONI for two years. He has appealed to the Court of Arbritration for Sport hoping to have the sentence reduced after admitting his guilt and cooperating with prosecutors.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo smashed a television set after seeing McLaren's Lewis Hamilton snatch the Formula One world title from Felipe Massa in last weekend's season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix.

"I broke the television, I must tell the truth," Montezemolo told a news conference at a Ferrari event in Mugello on Sunday.

"When a television breaks it makes a terrible bang. My daughter in the other room was given an awful fright. Luckily we had another television so I was able to watch the podium ceremony, which I enjoyed."

Ferrari's Massa won his home grand prix and was poised for championship victory before Hamilton overtook a slowing Timo Glock on the final bend to finish in the fifth place he needed to clinch the title.

"I reckon that in the history of F1, we have never seen a world championship decided on the last bend of the last lap of the last grand prix," added Montezemolo, who saw Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen steal the title last season in the final race.

"Miracles, when they happen, usually only happen once. I say that because last year was a miracle. A repeat is usually impossible. In Brazil, with Massa, we were in the process of producing another miracle."

China Starts its Gold Rush

As a symbol of its powerful reemergence, China's first Olympic gold medal couldn't have been any more fitting. On Saturday, just 12 hours after the blaze of fireworks that opened the Beijing Games, Chen Xiexia, a Chinese female weightlifter in the 48 kg class, captured the host nation's first gold by heaving a combined total of 212 kg, an Olympic record.

A 25-year-old who has dedicated 13 years of her life to this grueling sport, Chen thoroughly dominated the event, lifting 13 kg more than Turkish silver medalist Sibel Ozkan. A capacity crowd watched the Chinese champion's Herculean display - weightlifting may be a sporting sideshow in other countries, but in China it is prime-time viewing.

By the end of Day 1 of full competition, China had collected another gold, courtesy of Pang Wei, a male marksman in the 10-meter air pistol competition. With its pair of golds, the host country was already atop the gold-medals table, a possible harbinger of glories to come. In the next few days, China should continue dominating in the weightlifting competition, and diving is expected to bring another golden harvest. Then will likely come stellar performances in badminton and table tennis. Watch out for Team China.

China has presented a dramatic display of fireworks, music and dancing to mark the opening of its Beijing Olympics.

Some 10,000 performers took part in the ceremony, watched on TV by an estimated one billion people, before athletes paraded around the national stadium.

Some 90,000 fans packed the new national stadium - known as the Bird's Nest because of its steel lattice construction - and cheered the performers.

The choreographed show took seven years to plan, and costs are estimated to have hit a record-breaking $40bn (£20bn).

It began at eight minutes past eight on the evening of 8 August, reflecting the belief widespread in Asia that eight is a lucky number.

More than three hours later, China's President Hu Jintao officially declared the Games open.

And in a theatrical finish to the day's activities, champion gymnast Li Ning was winched up to the rim of the stadium carrying the Olympic torch - the end of its journey around the world.

He used the torch to light the Olympic cauldron - in the form of another huge torch - and an explosion of fireworks ensued.

BAGHDAD - Iraq have been banned from next month's Beijing Games because of a government decision to disband the country's National Olympic Committee (NOC), a senior official said on Thursday.

"This morning we were informed of the final decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend the membership of the Iraqi Olympic Committee," NOC general secretary Hussein al-Amidi told Reuters.

"It is a blow to Iraq and its international reputation, its athletes and its youth."

The government of Iraq disbanded the NOC in May because of a dispute over how it had been assembled. The IOC gave Iraq a deadline to reinstate the committee but the government has refused to back down.

Iraq had planned to send a small team despite violence that has killed more than 100 athletes in the country since the 2003 United States-led invasion.

At least seven Iraqi athletes, two rowers, a weightlifter, a sprinter, a discus thrower, a judoka and an archer, had won places in Beijing.

"There's nothing I can do. The government of Iraq wanted this. I can't believe I'm not going to take part in the Beijing Olympics. The news is hard to take," archer Ali Adnan told Reuters from Egypt where he had been training.

Beijing will be dressed to impress this August when the world turns its attention east for the Summer Olympics. Radar lists eight changes in its July/August issue that China is making to ensure the city is picture perfect when the cameras go on.

1. Reduced traffic
To avoid unsightly traffic, the Chinese government will only let half of Beijing's drivers on its streets. How will they decide who gets to drive? Even- and odd-numbered license plates will alternate days. See, life is fair.

2. Less spitting
China's government is known for its oppressive quirks, but that does not include prohibiting spitting in the street. Until now. Fines and tissues will be handed to the defiant.

3. Fewer felines
Apparently, Beijing is like one giant cat lady. And that never did my image any good, so I can see why China is concerned. To reduce the city's overpopulated kitty sidewalks, the government launched an aggressive campaign to ensure people know the truth about cats. You know, like how they carry SARS. Scared pet owners have been sending their beloved fluffies to cat death camps.

4. Cloudless skies
You know what they say! It never rains in Beijing when they hire scientists to shoot silver iodide-filled rockets into clouds from 21 locations to preempt summer showers.

5. No knockoffs
Take your counterfeit Olympic gear back to Canal Street. Officials are patrolling the streets, particularly looking out for unauthorized use of the Olympic logo. Make sure your new mug has all five Olympic rings!

6. Orderly lines
Since China is a Communist country, it surprises me that standing in line never really took off. But there you have it. Preferring to nudge their way to the front, Beijingers have been learning the letter queue for over a year now with monthly, government-induced practice.

7. No turtle blood
Competitive athletes take note: Turtle blood — and deer penis — can be used as performance-enhancing drugs. Just not in Beijing this August.

8. No Chinglish
Bad translations can be so much fun — "slip and fall down carefully" — but for a city in primping mode they are an embarrassment. Unfortunately, a 35-person committee is "caretaking" this problem.

Looks like once they get these eight woes under control, they'll be good to go for 08/08/08 . . . right? Are cosmetic changes like these eclipsing the greater human rights concerns? If China is shiny on the outside, will people overlook deeper trouble?

Fabio CannavaroItaly captain Fabio Cannavaro will miss Euro 2008 after tearing ligaments in his left ankle during training.

The Real Madrid defender collided with Giorgio Chiellini in a practice match at Italy's base in Austria on Monday.

After the incident, Cannavaro lay on the pitch for about 20 minutes before being stretchered off.

Fiorentina's Alessandro Gamberini has been called up as his replacement, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon likely to take over the captaincy.

Italy had been in Austria for just six hours when Cannavaro suffered his injury.

A statement issued by the Italian Football Federation said: "The news we feared was confirmed in Baden late on Monday evening.

"Fabio Cannavaro will say goodbye to our European adventure, before it has even begun.

"The captain has suffered torn ligaments, which happened the moment his foot made contact with the ground. His ankle twisted awkwardly."

Cannavaro, 34, capped 116 times, skippered Italy to 2006 World Cup glory in Germany, winning the World Player of the Year award.

His absence is a serious setback for Italy, who are in Euro 2008's 'Group of Death' with France, the Netherlands and dark horses Romania.

However, the emergence of centre-back Andrea Barzagli, who has produced some assured displays for Italy in the last year, will slightly cushion the blow.

Defender Marco Materazzi is also in the squad while Chiellini and Christian Panucci can play at centre-back rather than full-back.

Italy open their campaign against the Dutch on Monday 9 June in Berne.
