Seoul (ANTARA News/Asia Pulse) - Sony Corp. (TSE:6758) and Samsung Electronics Co. (KSE:005930) have reached a basic agreement to invest an additional 200 billion yen (US$1.915 billion) to increase production at their South Korean LCD panel joint venture, S-LCD Corp., The Nikkei learned Monday.
The investment, which is expected to be shouldered equally, will be used to build a new factory capable of churning out 50,000 to 60,000 eighth-generation glass substrates a month.
The new factory will begin mass production in the first half of 2009, sharply boosting the joint venture's production capacity of eight-generation glass substrates, which are ideal for fabricating 32-inch LCD panels.
