Eight passengers and two flight attendants were injured early Monday when an airliner hit severe turbulence over the Sierra Nevada mountains during a red-eye flight bound for Chicago, authorities said.
The pilots of the United Airlines Boeing 757, flying from Los Angeles to O'Hare International Airport, diverted to Denver after the plane flew into the turbulence shortly before 3 a.m., said United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy.
The injured passengers and crew members were taken to Denver hospitals. The plane was carrying 187 people.
