Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is currently collecting data on the suspected embezzlement of an estimated Rp5 trillion - Rp6 trillion in funds meant to develop housing for civil servants, the commission`s chief said.
"For years, civil servants` monthly salaries have been deducted supposedly to form a housing development fund which is now estimated to have reached a total of Rp5 trillion or Rp6 trillion. But has there been any improvement in their housing conditions? The answer is none," KPK Chairman Antasari Azhar said.
Speaking at a Golkar Party general election management board national coordination conference here Monday evening, Azhar said if the Rp5 trillion - Rp6 trillion had really been collected for the avowed purpose, civil servants would by now be living in proper housing as was the case in Brunei Darussalam and other countries.
"In reality, civil servants in the lowest salary brackets (Categories I and II) are never able to own a house until they reach retirement age. Where have the Rp6 trillion in funds actually gone?" he said.
