Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA News) - National Family Planning Coordinating Board (BKKBN) chief Dr Sugiri Syarif said Indonesia`s population was increasing by three million each year.

He said if the population increase was not overcome, it would create problems later on.

Syarif said the increase was relatively big but the growth was relatively slow thanks to the implementation of the national family planning program.

Syarif was here to attend the launching of a Family Planning Services Month. He said the number of Indonesia`s population was now recorded at 226 million people. This meant that one year ahead it would reach 229 million that would make Indonesia the fourth most populous country after China and India.

He said though China had a big population, its population growth was relatively stable. The highest population growth in the world was that of India followed by several African countries.

Indonesia, after launching its family planning program, was ranked 50th in the list of countries with fast population growth.

He said in order to make the family planning program a success in Indonesia, the BKKBN was applying two family planning program systems, namely the use of contraceptive devices and the appeal on young couple to delay their marriages.
