Quake hits Sumbawa island

Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia`s Sumbawa island on Monday evening but there was no immediate report of casualties or material damage.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 06.13 p.m. was in the sea 111 km southwest of Taliwang in West Sumbawa district at a depth of 21 km, the spokesman for the meteorology and geophysics office at the Selaparang Airport here, A. Rahman, said on Monday.

"The tectonic earthquake did not have the potential of causing a tsunami," he said.

The tremblor was strongly felt in the East Nusa Tenggara provincial capital of Mataram where many residents rushed outdoors for fear of the quake`s impact.
