Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta Police Headquarters has questioned 78 of its officers involved in an attack on National University (Unas) students inside their campus in South Jakarta last Saturday morning (May 24), a spokesman said.

"We have questioned 78 men but so far none of them has been declared a suspect," the Jakarta Police Headquarters` chief information officer, Senior Commissioner I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana, told reporters on Wednesday.

The 78 police officers were questioned as witnesses in the incident, Ana said referring to the massive assault which a Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) official had termed a violation of human rights.

The Jakarta police headquarters had also intended to question the chief of the South Jakarta police office, Senior Commissioner Chairul Azwar, but had not yet done so as Azwar was attending a conference outside Jakarta, Ana said.

Earlier, on Monday, National Police Chief Gen Sutanto had said, no human rights violation was committed when police arrested demonstrators in front of the Unas campus. "What happened was an act to enforce the law to protect public security," he said.

The vice chairman of Komnas HAM, Ridha Saleh, had earlier said last Saturday`s police action in arresting demonstrators against the government`s decision to raise fuel oil prices was a violation of human rights and therefore the police`s leadership must take appropriate measures against the officers involved.
