Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian police force has launched an internal probe into scores of officers who stormed a university campus to break up a violent protest over fuel prices, a spokesman said Thursday.

"Seventy-eight police personnel are under investigation related to the incident at Unas (National University)," police spokesman Abubakar Nataprawira was quoted by AFP as saying.

Hundreds of students threw homemade firebombs and clashed with police early Saturday in front of the National University in South Jakarta during a protest against a 28.7 percent hike in subsidised fuel prices.

More than 100 students were arrested but lawmakers have criticised the police response and called for an investigation.

Nataprawira said evidence collected from the scene showed there were "third parties trying to create friction between the police and protesters."

Most of the arrested students have been released but 34 remain in custody.

Some student leaders have criticised the behaviour of the protesters, saying there was no need for violence.
