Mataram, W Nusatenggara, (ANTARA News) - House Speaker Agung Laksono has said he was annoyed at Saturday`s attack on the Jakarta-based National University (Unas) campus by police personnel, whom he accused of developing culture of violence.

"Once again, I am strongly opposed to culture of violence, the more so because it took place at a campus and entered the political sphere. We must be opposed to it," he said on the sidelines of his working visit here.

If the report was true that security personnel had searched the class rooms and blood were scattered on the third floor of the campus, the action could mar democracy and academic freedom, he said.

"Searching and vandalizing (a campus) can mar many things, particularly democratization. Thus, don`t act like attacking a foreign enemy," he said.

Agung asked the police to give priority to persuasive approaches and dialogs with demonstrating students.

"Don`t attack spontaneously. It is possible those attacked could be their brothers, nephews or nieces. If they are invited to a dialog, they will certainly accept it," he said.

More than 100 people were arrested in an anti-fuel price hike protest at the campus at the weekend.

The police said they had made the arrests because the protesters had resorted to violence.
