Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Boediono, the government`s sole candidate for the post of Bank Indonesia (BI) governor, underwent a `fit-and-proper` test at the Parliament building here on Monday.

During the test, he presented his views on running the central bank before members of the House of Representatives (DPR)`s Commission XI (which deals with banking affairs)

Boediono said he would focus on two matters if he was appointed BI governor, namely on the basic principles which should become BI`s foundation in supporting the national economy, and on concrete actions and the agenda of managing national economic development amid volatile global economic conditions.

The basic principles concerned BI`s position in national development, independence, competitiveness and credibility, he said.

He also promised to improve the performance of BI employees by strengthening their spirit to prepare them to face any challenges and problems.

"Restoring the spirit and performance of the central bank is the responsibility of the bank`s leader," he said.

Boediono, currently the coordinating minister for economic affairs, also emphasized the importance of clear regulations on BI`s decision-making process and its budget spending.

"The objective is to prevent `disasters` such as happened recently in BI from reoccurring in the future," he said.

After the test, the Parliament would officially name the elected candidate for the post of BI governor on April 10 which will be the last or closing day of Parliament`s sitting before it goes into a recess starting April 11, 2008.

President Yudhoyono submitted Boediono`s name to the Parliament last Tuesday. The House had earlier rejected two candidates proposed by the President to succeed the current BI governor, Burhanuddin Abdullah, who will end his 5-year term on May 17, 2008. (*)
