The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) said that some 1.1 million students have become as drug addicts, whose total number in Indonesia has reached 3.2 million, acting chairman of BNN Brig Gen Muji Waluyo said on Wednesday.

He added that total number was actually only the tip of an iceberg because the 3.2 million drug addicts were on official lists, and that the real number is much higher than the official figure.

The narcotic business in Indonesia, he added, was very lucrative as this line of business could bring Rp30 trillion in profits per year.

He said the office had taken out some preventive measures, including disseminating 33 mobile units warning the people of the danger of narcotic drugs, among others by distributing reading matter on the subject.

He added that the office would also give guidance to prison inmates involved in narcotic drug abuse.

So far, Indonesia only has 13 special penitentiaries of the total of 531 jails for drug addicts.(*)
